Help deliver life and hope this Easter

In disaster and conflict-affected countries, bringing new life into the world carries life-threatening risks - countries affected by conflict and disaster have some of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world.

Women displaced by conflict are forced to seek refuge in overcrowded, unsanitary camps with limited access to basic healthcare, and refugees often find themselves in a foreign country with no community or income to support them.

Just £10 will provide a Clean Delivery Kit containing the essential items needed to keep a mother and baby safe during childbirth

Last year 36,457 babies were safely delivered by Medair’s teams in some of the world’s hardest-to-reach places!

South Sudan

In South Sudan, violent conflict has forced millions of people from their homes. Many are seeking refuge in overcrowded, unsanitary temporary camps with limited access to even basic health care. Miriam (below) gave birth in a Medair-supported clinic in South Sudan:

'It's much better here at the clinic. There is good care, and there is follow up. Staff record everything about the baby and they come to check.'

Jordan

Thousands of Syrian refugees in Jordan face harsh living conditions - limited resources and economic challenges make daily life even more difficult, preventing many from accessing essential services. Rawan fled to Jordan with her family seeking safety and a better future, but life has not been easy for her: Rawan suffers from leukemia and then discovered she was pregnant with triplets. Continuing her treatment during pregnancy was risky, but stopping it also put her health in danger. When her babies were born prematurely, Medair was able to cover the cost of her delivery and the premature care her babies needed.

"It was a very difficult time for me. I was exhausted, unable to move, and in desperate need of support. The financial stress was overwhelming because I knew my babies would be born prematurely, which meant high medical costs."

Women like Miriam and Rawan are sustaining life against the odds in some of the world's toughest places. Your support gives them hope. Just £10 can provide a Clean Delivery Kit to keep a mother and baby safe during childbirth.

A letter from Dr Liz Lewis, NHS GP and Medair Health Advisor:

Working as a GP in the UK, as well as for Medair in crisis-affected countries, I am privileged to help mothers and newborns around the world.

"I’m often asked whether I find it hard: seeing the difficulties faced by people in some countries compared to here at home....my answer is always that, whether I’m in Surrey or in South Sudan, the person in front of me needs help and I can be part of providing it - the only difference can be the resources available to treat them."

In places ravaged by conflict or disaster, it is the pregnant mothers and their fragile newborn babies who are typically the most vulnerable - to disease, to malnutrition and to infection. Tragically, about a quarter of neonatal deaths and more than 40% of maternal deaths occur on the day of birth, often due to preventable complications. If these mothers and babies had received skilled care, even with the most basic medical resources, many lives could have been saved.

We are committed to playing our part in bringing hope and medical help to places that desperately need it - will you play your part in this critical work too?
