Who attends the ROC?
Attendance is on an invitation-only basis for candidates whose profile is considered a strong fit for a role in our country programmes. Most participants who attend the ROC successfully complete the course and begin a career with Medair within several months.
Roles at the Headquarters, which involve visits to our country programmes will also require completion of the ROC.

Medair’s Relief and Recovery Orientation Course serves as an invaluable introduction to Medair’s values, culture, and programming and to the humanitarian sector at large. Participants will experience the realities of humanitarian work through practical and challenging simulations. Throughout the course, participants will learn about the professional and biblical principles of humanitarian aid, the unique challenges relief workers face in our country programmes, the challenges of living internationally in an insecure environment and working within a multicultural team, and the complexities of working with a variety of stakeholders in the humanitarian aid sector.
We work in difficult contexts under challenging circumstances, and how we work and what motivates us matters greatly to the success of our teams. Therefore, the course helps determine if a humanitarian career with Medair is the right fit for you, and if you are a clear match for a role with Medair.
The ROC is normally hosted near our Headquarters in Switzerland multiple times per year.
There is a 500 Euros course fee, which covers all course content, simulations, and orientation provided by Medair for the seven days, as well as a unique personality report – based on the Hogan methodology – delivered at the end of the course through our partner Thrive. This course fee also includes the costs of all meals and accommodations for the duration of the course. However, travel costs to and from the ROC are the responsibility of the participant.
The ROC is an orientation course, but it is also used to evaluate prospective staff. At the ROC, we evaluate participants in five core areas: motivation, adaptability, technical skills, ability to work within a team, and leadership and management skills.
At the end of the ROC, each participant is interviewed by a member of our Human Resources team and/or sector specialist to evaluate their experiences during the week and discuss their possible future with Medair.
