Finding Peace Within: MHPSS Assistance in Eastern Ukraine
In Sumy, the Medair office is a hive of activity as the MHPSS (Mental Health and Psychosocial Support) team prepares for another field visit. The team is packing supplies and materials for a stress-awareness session in Okhtyrka. Today, they won’t just be delivering training – they’ll be bringing hope to a community that’s lived under the shadow of conflict.
As we drive to Okhtyrka, a town about an hour and a half away, I think about the people waiting for us. In a region still recovering from the trauma of war, the need for mental health support is immense.
When we arrive at the local kindergarten, the smiles of the staff and attendees greet us. They’ve been waiting for this moment – an opportunity to pause, breathe, and connect. Some sit quietly in the courtyard, unsure of what to expect, but eager to learn.
Anna and Aliesia, our PSS assistants, begin the session. They blend humour and heart, breaking down complex psychological concepts into everyday language. As Anna explains how stress affects the body, Aliesia lightens the mood with jokes and personal stories. The group practices simple breathing exercises together, their initial hesitation melting into smiles.
For many of these attendees, it’s the first time they’ve been part of anything like this. A moment to step away from the harsh realities of daily life and focus on self-care.
“I truly enjoyed coming here today,” says Iryna, one of the participants. “Not only did I learn something useful, but I also felt a sense of calm. Please come again!”
Back in the Sumy office, Valeria, another PSS (psychosocial support) assistant, explains that Medair’s MHPSS work includes both awareness sessions and peer support groups. The support groups provide a safe space for people to share their struggles. For people with deeper needs, Medair partners with UCARE, a local team of therapists who offer one-on-one counselling, ensuring that everyone gets the right support.
In Kharkiv, Medair’s unique Household Visit programme brings support directly to those who need it most. Olena, a former local deputy school head, now dedicates her life to helping her neighbours heal.
“Once, I was the one receiving help,” Olena says. “Now, I’m the one giving it. It’s the best feeling in the world.”
One of her beneficiaries, Svitlana, a 62-year-old cancer patient, values Olena’s visits deeply. “Talking to her makes me feel better,” Svitlana shares. “After we meet, my interest in life comes back.”
Through its work, Medair isn’t just offering support; it’s restoring hope. For many in eastern Ukraine, these sessions provide a lifeline, helping people rediscover their strength and find peace, even in the midst of hardship.
